After more than a century of industrialization inOntario, stringent new environmental regulations have reduced the discharge of hazardous, toxic materials from industrial and municipal discharges. But what happened to all the chemicals discharged in the past? There are still fish consumption restrictions on most fish from the Great Lakes and many small river systems throughoutOntario. Where are the chemicals such as mercury and PCBs coming from? The simple answer is “the sediments”. In hundreds of locations aroundCanada, contaminated sediments have become the source for persistent, toxic and bioaccumulative substances in our environment.
This course will give participants a background in some of the environmental programs and legislation which involve contaminated site assessment (aquatic) and clean-up, and through case studies demonstrate the process of project planning through to data analysis and reporting. A large portion of the course will be hands on work in the Ontario Ministry of the Environment toxicology laboratory learning culturing and testing (toxicity and bioaccumulation) techniques for the common freshwater sediment testing organisms Chironomus dilutus, Hyalella azteca, Hexagenia spp., Lumbriculus variegatus, and fathead minnow.
This course will be completely interactive, and participants should arrive prepared “to get their hands dirty” (bring personal protective gear if you have it available).
Cost:
Students: $65 (members)/ $80 (non-members)
Regular: $85 (members) / $105 (non-members)
