Abstract:
Ever wonder how a career in environmental science actually unfolds? Join Sarah as she shares her winding path from studying Canadian aquatic ecosystems as a student to monitoring global water systems for industry. Through personal stories and real research examples, discover how chasing the fate of chemicals in water led to unexpected opportunities across government, academia, and industry. Whether you're navigating your own science career or simply curious about environmental monitoring and risk assessment, this talk offers practical insights and honest advice about building a meaningful scientific career.
Bio:
Sarah joined Syngenta in 2022 as a Senior Environmental Fate and Modelling Project Expert. Since completing undergrad and postgraduate degrees at UofG and Usask in Environmental Biology and Toxicology, Sarah has continued to focus on aquatic research in various roles in government and academia over the past 10+ years. Her work has focused on understanding contaminant bioavailability, fate and transport, and effects of chemicals in the environment from roles at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, AgResearch, RWTH Aachen University and Goethe University of Frankfurt. She is an active member and participant of several organizations and technical working groups focused on water monitoring and oversees a number of water monitoring activities at Syngenta.
