Abstract: As a developmental toxicologist, I have dedicated myself to trying to understand how toxicant exposure in aquatic ecosystems can impact animals during their most sensitive life stages. This becomes difficult when we consider how dynamic early-life stages are. Animals present different life histories with unique developmental trajectories and ultimately are highly influenced by the ambient environment. A general theme from my research has always been that timing matters, because the timing of exposure, and the timing of when you look for effects, captures a unique perspective in toxicology. My talk will highlight some of the major lessons of my work to date, and their implications for critical-life stages of aquatic organisms.


Biography: Andrew received his master’s from the University of British Columbia and his doctorate from the University of Calgary, followed by completing a postdoctoral appointment at McMaster University. He is currently at Wilfrid Laurier University with Dr. Erin Leonard, where his research explores sensory responses to toxicants in cold-water fish species native to Canada. Throughout his career, Andrew has established close collaborations with researchers at the University of Toronto, the University of Exeter, and the School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo. His mission is to characterize whole-organism performance in aquatic species following environmental perturbation during early-life stages.
