Describe your involvement or experience with L-SETAC:

I joined L-SETAC after finishing my Master's as way to push myself to interact more with environmental scientists and become a more active member of the community.

Describe your short-term career aspirations:

In the short term, I want to transition my academic and co-op experience into a career in environmental science. My Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees have given me a strong foundation in scientific research, laboratory work, data analysis, and problem-solving, and I am eager to apply those skills in a more practical, field-based setting. I am particularly interested in pursuing my EPt designation while gaining hands-on experience in areas such as site remediation, environmental assessment, and sustainability. My goal is to develop into a well-rounded environmental professional who can combine strong scientific skills with practical field experience and contribute meaningfully to environmental projects

Describe your long-term career aspirations:

In the long term, I hope to build on my experience in environmental science and progress toward a career in environmental auditing and compliance. I want to develop a strong understanding of environmental regulations, management systems, and industry best practices while gaining experience across a range of environmental projects. As I grow professionally and work toward my EP designation, I would like to transition into roles that involve conducting environmental audits, identifying areas for improvement, assessing regulatory compliance, and helping organizations develop more sustainable practices. Ultimately, my goal is to become a well-rounded environmental professional who can combine my scientific background and field experience with auditing and compliance expertise to help organizations manage their environmental responsibilities effectively

Describe any interests or hobbies outside of academics:

Since completing my Master's and having a bit more free time, I've decided to pursue some more artistic hobbies, including writing, sketching, and wildlife/nature photography.

If you could meet anyone, living or historical, who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Robert W. Chambers, the author of The King in Yellow. The King in Yellow is one of my favorite books of all time, and is easily my favorite work of weird fiction, even more so that the works of Lovecraft. It would be amazing to get a chance to talk to Chambers and pick his brain for his inspirations for his writing as well as discussing the deeper themes and symbolism in the book.

What is your most memorable graduate school moment and why?

Presenting my research at the 2025 annual meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists in North Carolina. It was the first time I had attended a scientific conference, as well as the first time I had presented my work in front of people I didn't already know. It was very stressful beforehand, but I was able to present my data clearly and effectively without any issue and I ended up enjoying the experience a lot more than I though I would. I also got to sit down with Kelly Weinersmith and discuss her research as well as her book, A City on Mars which was amazing.

What accomplishments are you most proud of, and why?

Completing my Master's and successfully defending my thesis is definitely the most proud I have been of myself. There were so many issues that I faced during the course of my research, and there were multiple occasions where it felt like I wouldn't be able to get it done, or where I started researching different organisms in case my main project fell through. As a result, when I finally generated the complete mitochondrial genome for Obvallatus mesnili, as well as managing to get a chunk of Adelea ovata and completed my thesis, it genuinely felt amazing.

Supervisor:

Dr. John R. Barta
